| Carterville has a reputation for high academic standards. The Carterville School District has completed the construction a new elementary school and is finalizing plans for a new high school. Carterville is also home to  John A Logan College (one of the countrys top community colleges) and Southern Illinois University is located only 10 miles west in Carbondale.
Carterville borders the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge and Crab Orchard Lake which are part of the Mississippi Flyway for waterfowl.
