Welcome to the Metro Lakeland area of Southern Illinois. Located about 120 miles southeast of St. Louis, MO, this area includes the cities and towns of Ann-Jonesboro, Carbondale, Carterville, Cobden, Herrin, Marion, Makanda, and Murphysboro.
Southern Illinois is known for mild fall weather and great
outdoor attractions. The Shawnee National Forest encompasses more than 270,000 acres in Southern Illinois and is home to outstanding natural areas which offer numerous outdoor experiences. Bordered on the east and west by the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, the Shawnee National Forest flourishes with vegetation, wildlife, and recreational opportunities.
Bald Knob Cross | Horseback riding is a tradition in this part of the state. Generations of equestrians have enjoyed the splendors of the forest on horseback. Trail of Tears State Forest and Lusk Creek Canyon are good places to pack a horse and set off on the trail to see the sites. Johnson Creek Recreation Area and Camp Cadiz also have equestrian campgrounds.
Rock climbing is becoming an increasingly popular sport throughout the world, and Southern Illinois is no exception. High sandstone bluffs and rock outcroppings at places such as Jackson Hollow and Cedar/Draper's Bluff make the Shawnee one of the nation's most desirable climbing destinations.
There are a variety of golf courses in Southern Illinois each offering different levels of challenge and scenery.
Rich in Civil War history the area also falls into what was once known as Little Egypt in part due to historical comparisons of the land mass surrounded by the great Mississippi and Ohio Rivers with that of Egypts Nile Delta region. Another theory describes the soil differences between southern and northern Illinois allowing the southern region to harvest apples, grain and corn. Northern settlers would make the trek to this area to provide food for families and animals creating a reference to the Bible story of Jacobs sons going to Egypt to buy grain and survive a famine that may have resulted in the nickname.
The area, no longer referred to as "Egypt" still remains rich in many ways. Home to Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, Advanced Power International, Diagraph MSP and John A Logan Community College, the Tri-county area of Williamson, Jackson and Union remains a comfortable, quiet and beautiful area to call home.
